Human

Adding machine paper, handwritten binary

2022

An installation made with hundreds of feet of adding machine paper. The word “human” is handwritten in binary over and over to fill the paper. The repetitive practice of writing in binary allowed me to take the place of the machine the paper was originally designed for. Here, the language is unreadable by both human and machine. The communication between either entity has been interrupted.

2019

Displayed on the Watt Family Innovation Center at Clemson University, Clemson, SC.

In an effort to redirect the attention of the viewers, flashing urgent red letters are combined with the quickly paced imagery. The power to connect is in all of our hands, just as much as the power to disconnect and remain present in the moment. This video serves as a reminder to free our eyes and minds from the captive quality of tiny screens, and refocus on real human connections.
